New Beginnings for Kory | Sidwell Summer

Kory's sneakers scuffed against the ground, sending little clouds of dust upwards as they stepped onto the soccer field. Fall's amber hues dotted the trees surrounding the field, providing a picturesque background to a moment that felt both intimidating and exhilarating. The uniform, freshly pressed and neatly worn, felt a tad snug around the shoulders, but that only added to the bubbling anticipation in Kory.

Sidwell Summer seemed so far away, yet memories of those sun-drenched days were still fresh. Kory remembered the first day vividly. The vast field, the cheers and laughter, and most importantly, the knotted sensation of uncertainty that tugged at the pit of their stomach. Yet, in the span of a summer, that vast field became a familiar playground, and the cheers and laughter a welcomed sound. By the end of the week at Sidwell Summer, Kory's feet danced with the soccer ball, deftly maneuvering it with skills they never thought they'd master.

Flashback moments of their summer coach's voice echoed in their ears. "Focus on the ball, Kory!" "Remember to look up!" "Great pass!" With every word of encouragement, Kory's confidence grew, and the nervousness melted away, replaced with an enthusiasm that surprised even themself.

Now, as they stood there amidst their new teammates, those familiar jitters returned. There were new faces, new fields, new coaches, but that old feeling of uncertainty was back. Kory pulled from the reservoir of confidence they had built over the summer. The memories of mastering the corner kick, making a great pass, and the thrill of scoring the winning goal came back. They remembered how the second day at Sidwell Summer was so much easier than the first.

Taking a deep breath, Kory approached a group of teammates practicing passes. With a shy but determined smile, they asked, "Can I join in?" The players nodded, welcoming them into the circle. The ball came rolling towards Kory, and without missing a beat, they deftly stopped it, looked up, and passed it on.

As the game started, Kory's nerves were still there but pushed to the background by the rush of adrenaline and memories of Sidwell Summer. With every pass, tackle, and sprint, Kory felt more at home, relishing the thrill of the game and the camaraderie of the team.

As the game ended, Kory walked off, jersey stained with grass and sweat, heart pounding, with a mix of exhaustion and elation. The season was just beginning, but Kory already knew they belonged. The summer had given them more than just soccer skills; it had given them the courage and confidence to embrace new challenges head-on.
